New bridge to open this week

By Tyler Nash

The huge $163 million Deception Bay Rd interchange upgrade has reached a major milestone.

This week the first bridge across the Bruce Highway is opening to traffic as the huge project, which started in October 2020, stays on track to be completed in early 2023.

It includes building two new parallel bridges, upgrading two signalised intersections on Deception Bay Rd, expanding existing entry and exit ramps and providing for those on foot and riding.

Jointly funded by Federal and State Governments on an 80/20 split, the upgrade is seen as a “key” to improving travel times and safety, as well as helping the local economy.
